By the time the off-season arrives, chances are you’re ready for a well-earned rest.
The last few weeks of training were likely the toughest, pushing you through fatigue and physical strain. Many athletes feel a sense of relief—but quickly find themselves unsure what to do with the sudden freedom.
Off-season mental preparation
This period is essential not just for physical recovery, but for mental reset too. It's the only time of year when you can truly switch off and recharge.
Rest & Recharge
Use the first part of the off-season to embrace your freedom from competition, pressure, and the demands of daily training. Have some fun and reconnect with the things that bring you joy—whether that’s spending time with friends and family, baking, traveling, or watching other sports. This is your time to simply enjoy life outside of performance.
Reflect & Review
As your energy begins to return, start reflecting on the season just gone. Ask yourself:
What went well?
What challenges did I face?
What did I learn from the highs and lows?
This is a great time to identify areas you’d like to improve, and to think critically about your environment.
Are you happy with your current support system? Is anything holding you back?
Plan & Prepare
Start considering your goals for the upcoming season—and beyond. What do you want to achieve? How can you make that happen? Are you on the right path toward your long-term ambitions?
Use this quieter period to make a loose plan. But remember, this is still your recovery phase, so don’t let planning become overwhelming. A gentle focus on your future can help maintain motivation and provide structure before training resumes.
If you’re facing big decisions, now is the ideal time to seek clarity around these. Seek input from your support network, but remember that you are accountable for the final choice. Perhaps revisit your long-term goals—where do you see yourself in five or ten years? What needs to change to help you get there?
Set Yourself Up for Success
While it may be tempting to completely disconnect from sport during the off-season, this is actually the perfect moment to lay the groundwork for the next stage of your journey. If you leave reflection and planning too late, you risk feeling overwhelmed once the season begins and demands rise again.
Make the most of this time—not just to recover, but to reset, refocus, and reignite your passion.
The better you prepare now, the more confident and energized you'll feel when it’s time to get back to work.
